Learn the Basics: Different Types of Nurses

So you’ve decided that you want to become a nurse, but surprisingly find that there are hundreds of different options in the nursing field!  This article will break down three of the different types of nurses, and what kind of career you can expect from each one.  Keep in mind that there are different types of schooling associated with each of these career paths, and you should choose the right one for you based on that as well, depending on your time and budget allowance.

Among the most common 3 avenues of nursing are the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and the Registered Nurse (RN).  If you are a bit unsure of whether or not a nursing career is right for you, the best option would be to start out as a CNA.  As a CNA you do not have as much training, so you would not have as many responsibilities as an LPN or an RN, but you would definitely get an inside look at what to expect if you decide to pursue your career.  While a large part of your work would be assisting the RN or LPN, your main role would be to take care of the patient on a very basic level.  Duties at this level would include shaving for the patient, turning the patient over to avoid bedsores, clipping the nails, and other basic hygiene-related tasks.  Along with that, a CNA would also be responsible the general janitorial duties of the patient’s room, keeping it clean and free of clutter.

Beyond a CNA position, with (typically) one year of schooling, and the passing of a required exam, you could become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).  Having more experience and schooling than a CNA, you would be responsible for tasks such as recording vital signs like blood pressure, height, weight, and pulse.  You would still also be responsible for a patient’s basic care, and with some experience, you would also be responsible for the oversight of the role of the CNA.

Of these three, the Registered Nurse (RN) has the biggest responsibility, therefore required to complete the most schooling.  In this role, you can expect to be administering medication and treatments, performing tests as well as analyzing the test results, as well as taking down a patient’s medical history.  As a RN, you will also be supervising the duties and responsibilities of the CNA and the LPN.  An important part of this role of nursing is the role you will take not only with the patient, but with the patient’s family.  It is your duty to devise a short and long term health care plan that you carefully explain to the patient and the family members.  You are also a source of advice and comfort for them, throughout the patient’s immediate care and beyond.

Many nurses who complete the RN level choose to continue their education by choosing a specialty that they are interested in, such as neonatal nurse, orthopedic nurse, or even a travel nurse.  Throughout your early experience in nursing, you should be able to determine the ongoing career path that best suits you.  Even if you determine that a specialty isn’t right for you, know that whatever path you take you are a key role in assisting someone’s ability to live a healthy, happy life.
